Amazing show, classic E Street Band keeping it tight and loose at the same time, and Chuck is so on it you can tell this song flows out of as easy as breathing.

Whenever Bruce and the band play with someone they strike the perfect balance of playing so tight, but feeling like a jam session with some mates. Always amazing energy, and most importantly they're all having a great time.

Chris Whitley is one of the most amazing Roots Musicians, needs no band, his voice and guitar are amazing.. Seems like he was forgotten after he passed away...

One of Charles most under appreciated tunes. He is just showing off his elite story telling ability

I'm interested in hearing the breakdown of the music theory behind this one. ;)
But seriously, this has some wild guitar playing and it's fun to watch as a guitar player because it's a very unique approach to the instrument. Enjoy! \m/

As promised Michael. This is Jason Molina aka Songs:Ohia with his band Magnolia Electric Co. This version is a bit moodier and doesn't hit as hard as the album version recorded by Steve Albini, but I love the emotion and rawness of this version. Jason is one of if not my most favorite American songwriter. I was lucky enough to see him multiple times live before his unfortunate and early death. I hope you enjoy him as much as I do.

You got do Kings X. 13 studio albums later, the world is still sleeping on these guys. One of the tastiest bands I've ever heard.

Allegedly they are said to have been a major influence on Pear Jam, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, The Smashing Pumpkins, Pantera and others.

This one obviously starts off shaky, but in typical Kings X fashion, by the end of the track their groove has you all in. One of my favorite tracks by them.

Appreciate your videos/lessons. Keep killin it

I stumbled across this dude a few years ago and immediately fell in love with him. He does the one-man-band schtick but I think he does it fairly well with the kick drum, tambourine, and the harmonica. This one isn't too complicated, but I do like that weird technique in the intro where he picks behind where he's fretted, and his thumb barring is interesting.

One of my favorite under-rated guitarists and vocalists, Grizzly Bearโ€™s Daniel Rossen as seen on tour supporting his 2022 solo album. He literally drove himself and his gear across the country to play some deeply personal and technically complex sets that draw on everything from 70s progressive rock, Gypsy jazz and Spanish flamenco style guitar. For me, this exemplifies an artist bravely pushing themselves beyond their comfort zone.

Michael, meet Ally Venable and her excellent band. I have the YouTube algorithm to thank for learning about her music. The band brings a ton of rhythm & blues, ripping licks, and attitude to every song considering their relatively young ages.

Check out this video from a TED event. The guitar work and drum fills are top notch.

Enjoy!

This band has come on my radar as one of my favorite sounds. I started looking at live shows after they came to my town and I found this whole set. I think you should definitely check out Darlin (Second to last in the set) and Palmyra (fourth in the set), even though they're all worth watching.

Like all Jason Isbell songs, this hits hard right in the feelings and heart. As someone that has had addiction issues and dealt with a lot of the same themes, it hits like he wrote it for me, as his songs do. Love what you do and your humanity being forward, what we all need.

Bruce Hornsby is, in my mind, one of the most talented popular musicians of the last 40 years. I've loved this song since I was a kid, and never heard a version quite like this. Plus, Bruce doesn't even play piano in this, he plays an Appalachian Dulcimer!

Check this out. Yep, really.

Hello!

How about a Holiday special?

Today I am sharing a band that is very near and dear to me and my heart. The Oh Hellos are an amazingly talented group of people who have taken what are normally very "traditional" Holiday songs and flipped them on their head, creating something I believe is quite stunning and FUN.

While there may not be a lot of "lead" happening, the rhythm, theory, and syncopation behind all of these songs/medleys in this performance is fantastic.

Beyond that, there are Ugly Sweaters, Hand Chimes, and even Snow! In an office!

Thank you for taking the time to comb through this, and I hope you and yours have a wonderful Holiday season!

Keep it in your hands.

Love what you do and have never sent a REACTS request, but I somehow saw this guy in my youtube feed and oh man is it something that scratches an itch. Seems like open tunings on nylon string guitar with lots of reverb and amazing songwriting. Would love to hear you break this one down.

Ridiculous acoustic playing. Definitely in non-standard tuning. Interested to hear your thoughts. Thanks!

Love to see you break down this beautiful version, especially the pre-โ€œacross the riverโ€ jam. Itโ€™s hot. Also, Iโ€™ve been watching your videos for a while and finally took the lifetime member plunge. So happy to be part of the community!

Let me start off by saying thank you for Guitargate! I just started teaching myself to play two years ago and Iโ€™m excited to start taking myself to a new level with your guidance. As for this react request - this may be the best cover of the best song of all time. I never wouldโ€™ve thought War Pigs needed keys but it elevates the song to levels previously unknown. You know as well as I do what the Main Squeeze are capable of and this cover really showcases their potential and skill levels. Iโ€™ve wanted to see your reaction to this for so long; do it for the people, Michael! (Plus with my birthday being next Friday the 8th it would make for one hell of a present!)
