THIS is the Grateful Dead at their very best. Only 4 shows in all of '75 when they really added jaz to the mix.
You seem to listen to a lot of newer Dead- which is when they were shells of themselves in comparison to the older stuff when their styles changed drastically from one year to the next up through early 79. From 80 on they pretty much sounded the same. By 89-90 they were toast regardless of that whole "Spring Tour 90" hoopla.
The Garcia Band oddly shined in 80-81 not to take anything away from the 70s incarnations. They were totally ripping as well.
I really wish you'd move away from anything past 85 and go backwards. You've covered enough of that crap. Lol

Ok- so I'm a pre-1980s Dead Head, as far as, listening goes even though my first show wasn't until 1/11/79. Jerry's playing was just superior to me than the post-1980. Just my opinion.
The Jerry Garcia Band hasn't gotten any love on here. I saw them over 100x between '79-'95. They were always good, but '80-'81 are my favorite years, for the most part, because of the energy he brought. Don't get me wrong- of course, there were great shows and years and are exceptions to my rule. Expressway to my Heart, Lonely Ave. '72, Keystone '73 shows, Tough Mama '76, Gomorrah/Dixie Down/Mission '78, etc.

The Tangled Up In Blues from 1981 really illustrate what I mean by energy. They were fast and powerful.
He played them a little too slow for me pre-'79 and later slowed them down way too much for me. His soloing is masterful and the closing solo is as hard rock-ish as Jerry got. Good stuff.
I'd love to see what other people have to say and post as far as JGB goes.

Marc Ribot guitarist. Not well-known player, but incredible and unique style. Real Avant Garde music by a master composer.

Just one of the numerous nuggets from this classic show. The entire show is a gem. By far one of the most energetic and well-played Dead shows ever. It didn't happen too often that the entire show was this well played end to end without any energy let up.

I know I'll get shit from people and no disrespect to the Allman Brothers, but... short and sweet.

Video, unfortunately, isn't available for this show, but here's imo, the best, or at least one of the best Weather Report Suite(s) the Dead ever played. It's kind of fallen under the radar because of the reputation of the more widely known Louisville, Ky show from the same tour. (Sound quality and availability has a lot to do with it I believe) It was part of my 'Original 6' tapes. The sound isn't the best, but good enough to feel. I'd love to hear a reaction of the Let It Grow portion, which starts at 6:09. Jerry's solos are incredible like most from that year. This one just stands out to me.
