I came across this band about a year ago, and I really think they are great. I suppose they qualify as Math Rock, but that isn't what's important. What is important is everyone in the band is really good at what they do, especially the bass player (check out some of their other songs). I think Japan has a really cool music scene that I am just now becoming aware of. Hope you all enjoy.

Jalan Crossland is one of the best musicians from Wyoming. Heck of a guitar player, but also a great banjo player. Thought you'd all dig this, since he's using a 6-string banjo. All of his stuff is great.

Just wanted to drop a New Orleans song today since it's Mardi Gras. Everyone in this video is a legend, especially in New Orleans. Hope you all enjoy.

Just a couple of virtuoso jazz players working over the fretboard like it owes them money. The speed and intricacies of this are truly impressive, especially as a duet. I also love Pedersen's face thought the whole thing. It's truly something to behold. Hope you all enjoy.
Donna Lee (credited to Charlie Parker in The Real Book) is on my list of songs to eventually learn, so I'd be interested in seeing what you (Michael) thinks of this version, and the benefit of learning jazz standards or just standards in general (bluegrass etc.). This was originally written for saxophone, and I think there is a lot of benefit to learning songs that were originally for other interments, too. You can tell the parts where the rests are were for the horn players to get a much needed breath in. Haha. Details like this give us insight to what other instruments limitations and strengths/benefits are. Good stuff to know for writing, as well as music appreciation in general.
Also, check out Jaco Pastorius version of Donna Lee. Another great take on this song.
Thanks.

Just recently rediscovered The Mars Volta after not listening to them for a few years. They are a great rock band and they put on a heck of a show. Sort of surprised that I didn't seen any other requests for them. Hope everyone enjoys this video. I think it would make a good reaction.
An interesting note, this video is with their first drummer, Jon Theodore. Jon is now the drummer for Queens of the Stone Age.

Every guitar player should know who Joe Pass is. This a great video from a 1980 BBC special hosted by the legendary pianist Oscar Peterson, who introduces Mr. Pass at the beginning. Hope you all enjoy.

Know Jalan Crossland? You're welcome.
Jalan Crossland is someone who has been on my radar for a long time, as he is for most folks who have spent time in Wyoming. He came in second in the 1997 Winfield National Guitar Fingerpicking Competition, then placed first in the 1999 Wyoming Flat pick Championship. He has been named a "Wyoming Treasure" by the Wyoming Arts Council, and was the second musician ever to receive the Wyoming Governor's Arts Award in 2013.
Jalan is a great song writer/lyricist, as well as a phenomenal guitar and banjo player. He brings feeling, humor, and musical chops to everything he does. He is a true working man's musician.
It took me a while to pick the right song to share with the community, but I think "Portrait of a Fish" shows what he's all about. I'm pretty sure most of you will really dig this. If you like it, check out the other stuff on YouTube. He also has 8 studio albums (four with a band and four solo), and they are all great, but I recommend "Trailer Park Fire & Other Tragedies" if you're looking to pick one up. He toured with a band for quite a few years, but currently tours solo. I'll post some of my other favorites in the weeks to come. Hope you all enjoy.
