Was a big fan of the Cars growing up with Just What I Needed being a favorite. Saw this about a week ago and the Punch Brothers just CRUSH IT!!! So impressed with their talent.

Hey Michael! I've been enjoying your country reactions lately. I thought you might like to check this one out. Travelin' Soldier is a great story song, originally written and released by Bruce Robison and made popular by The Chicks (who both have stellar versions); but I think Cody Johnson, along with his always rock-solid band, elevate it to another level. I also want to extend a sincere thank you for the community you've created here, and for helping re-ignite the fire for playing guitar in me, and many others out there I'm sure. Keep up the great work, brother!
I've watched this performance dozens of times and every time it floors me. Josh Ritter is maybe the most talented songwriter I've ever encountered and while I like his version of this tune, Chris' interpretation of it has made this the definitive version for me.
I could only hope to write lyrics with half the creativity of something like this:
After that it got colder, and the world got quiet. It was never quite day or quite night.
And the sea turned the colour of sky turned the color of sea turned the colour of ice.
After that all around us was vastness, one glassy desert of arsenic white,
And the waves that once lifted us, shifted instead into drifts against Annabel's sides.
I know you already reacted to this song, but this version features dueling solos with Warren Haynes.
Everything great about independent country - fun/creative/interesting lyrics; 2 awesome singers; and a band thatβs clearly played plenty of gigs, even if itβs not for lots of money. Love these dudes!
