Technique 102 - Palm Muting

This lesson has no video

Palm muting is how you get definition with your picking / strumming hand. With your palm you can change the timbre (sound) of the strings by applying a muting effect. This leads to more dynamic and percussive rhythm playing.

The technique present in virtually all musical styles, and is fairly simple and intuitive to apply.

First - Apply very light pressure with the palm of your picking hand at a 90 degree angle (perpendicular) to the strings.  Different pressures will yield different levels of muting, so start very soft, get a feel for it, and play accordingly.

Second- You need to find the β€œsweet spot.”  This is where the string meets the bridge. If you are too far away from the bridge your sound will be dead and have no life at all. If you are too far below where the string meets the bridge you will simply be playing an open string.

This spot may be a tad different from guitar to guitar, but it is always very near the confluence of the string and the bridge.

Mess around with it!

Some fun with palm muting.

🎸 Technique 102: Palm Muting 🎸

I’ve been playing for 20 years, but I’ve never taken formal lessons until now. I’m returning to the fundamentals by working through the Guitargate lessons, and in this video, I’m focusing on palm mutingβ€”a crucial technique for adding dynamics and texture to your playing. Whether you’re playing tight rhythms or adding subtle percussive elements, palm muting is a versatile skill that brings depth to your sound.

This practice session is part of my journey to improve my technique and control. Palm muting takes a bit of practice to master, but it’s incredibly rewarding once you get the hang of it.

If you’re working on palm muting too, feel free to share your progress or any tips that have helped you along the way. Let’s keep learning together!

The first example of palm muting that came to my mind was "Paranoid" by Black Sabbath so I figured I'd play a brief excerpt for this lesson.

Chonkin' in and out of time for this one. Mostly wanted to get this posted so that I could move on to the next steps. I'll just say, should have used a metronome, but as with the playing of the song... I was rushing. Lol.

Little flub at the end, ha.

Palm muting the open Es on "Oh Well"

I'm trying to learn my first song note for note "Edge of Desire" John Mayer. It has a bit of palm muting so I thought it was a good chance to show what I'm working on and get some constructive criticism. I'm trying to learn 12 songs this year (I'm a little behind with Edge of Desire it's been tough for me.) I have never really learn any songs all the way through before. The power chords are just my anti-frustration tool haha trying to find what sounds good together.

Palm Muting

Everlong was the first song that came to mind to try out palm muting. I definitely to work on this song, but I got to practice my palm muting a bit.

I've found it quite difficult to palm mute effectively on my stratocaster. I've played some acoustic and find the hand positioning much more comfortable and effective. Two main problems I've noticed with the strat. 1) The volume knob really gets in the way of your right hand when trying to lay it across the bridge. You can kind of loop your pinky under the knob, but the whole thing just feels awkward. 2) The strings have been adjusted to stick out at different lengths from the back of my bridge, so even if I find the sweet spot for one string, the next string doesn't line up. Not sure there's a way around this really.
