Declaration up front - this is my favourite song by my favourite band. But I think it's well worthy of a react because of the chops (DUH, it's Nuno), but also the song construction, the tone, the musicality of the rest of the band.
I saw them here in Melbourne (Australia) a few years ago, and sadly they only did the short version of this, which was super frustrating (if expected) because I LOVE that opening chord @ 0:37.
Most people I know who love Nuno love his lead playing, and while that is indeed awesome, I LOVE his rhythm playing far more[1]. He fits the song, he propels it (not to downplay Pat and Paul/Kevin), he shapes it. I've been listening to this track/album for decades, and it STILL melts my brain, the stuff going on almost in the background.
I put "rock" as the tag, but really it's a kind of funk-metal? Maybe?
Anyway, just thought I'd put it up, as Extreme are criminally underrated, thanks to most people only knowing their two acoustic ballads.
[1]Yeah, I'm weird - I know the backing vocals to more songs than I know the lyrics to, I just love how things are constructed and embellished away from the spotlight :-D
Joni Mitchell is such a unique, iconic musician. I'm fascinated by her lyrics and her inventive/original chord shapes. Would love to have you break down this song -- or any song by her. She is a GIANT!
The legendary John Scofield joining Gov't Mule for some fantastic improvising. Dude has a mean guitar face too! :-)
