 AI summary

In this masterclass, guitarist Oz Noy breaks down the construction of a funky R&B groove in the key of G7, starting on the fourth degree (C7). He demonstrates his approach to building a complete track from the ground up, beginning with the foundational guitar part and gradually adding layers.

Oz emphasizes the importance of arrangement and space when adding multiple guitar parts. He explains that each overdub should complement rather than compete with existing parts, ensuring that sounds and rhythms don't clash or overlap unnecessarily. This attention to sonic space is crucial for creating a professional, breathable mix.

Throughout the demonstration, he adds bass, rhythm guitar, and additional overdubs, including a second rhythm guitar part that doubles the main guitar with a different voice to create a melodic theme. He also incorporates subtle effects like a phaser to add character and vibe to the sound.

The masterclass concludes with Oz encouraging viewers to create their own version of the track and share it, fostering an interactive learning experience where students can apply the techniques demonstrated and receive feedback on their work.

Hi, this tune is in the key of G, G7, but we're starting on the fourth degree, which is C7. And it's like a funky R&B kind of groove. Let's do it. All right, I'm going to add bass now. See what happens. I'm going to add a rhythm guitar part now. You want to make sure that whatever part you're playing doesn't go over the first guitar part, not with the sound and also not with all the rhythms and stuff. You want to make sure that there's some air going on and things don't fall on top of each other. So, let's see. The next overdub I'm going to do is going to be like second rhythm guitar, but I'm going to double the main guitar with another voice to give it some kind of a theme, a melody. I have a little bit of a phaser on it just to give it a little bit of a vibe. Cool. Make your own track and upload it. I want to hear what you did with it.
