Drawing inspiration from the legendary JJ Cale's laid-back style, Cris walks viewers through his creative process from the ground up. The session begins with Cris setting the tempo and exploring the drum sounds available on the pedal, establishing the rhythmic foundation for his composition. He then methodically builds the arrangement by layering different instrumental parts, starting with the core groove and progressively adding bass lines to flesh out the low end. As the masterclass continues, Cris enhances the texture by incorporating hi-hat flourishes that add subtle complexity to the rhythm section. He then demonstrates his improvisational skills by playing a lead guitar part over the established groove, showing how melody and rhythm work together in his songwriting approach. Throughout the demonstration, Cris performs the piece in the key of A for ease of playing, noting that the original recording was done in B flat. His teaching style is approachable and encouraging, inviting viewers to not only learn from his technique but to experiment and create their own interpretations of the groove, fostering a collaborative and creative learning environment. Full transcript Howdy everybody, Chris Jacobs here playing around with this amazing Teleport pedal by Guitar Gate. Demo the intro groove for one of my songs called "Jack the Whistle and the Hammer." I was kind of going for a JJ Cale thing with this one. So we'll tap out our tempo. Check out the drum sound. Yeah, and then we'll record it. All right. Let's play it through the park. So now we'll bring in the bass man. And that's the main groove of the song, and now we can add a little hi-hat flair. All right. Let's play a little lead over that groove. All right. Let's play it. And that's how I wrote that song, "Jack the Whistle and the Hammer." I'm doing it in the key of A. The recording's in B flat, but we'll just do it in A. And, yeah, check it out, see if you can play along, make your own version, and upload it. I'd love to hear it. ## Songs in this masterclass 1 song [Jack the Whistle and the Hammer ](/song/jack-whistle-and-hammer) [Cris Jacobs](/user/62076/view) Verified Artist 63 Download 8 Members only## Watch the full masterclass Included with GuitarGate Membership — the full video, transcript, downloads, and practice songs.
